Recently we overheard a conversation of someone saying they had to run to an interview right after work and didn’t have time to change. Now depending on what your current job uniform is, this could be a devastating situation. We wanted to give you a few tips on perfecting the quick change. Whether you have to run out during lunch or before or after a long day at the grindstone follow these steps to perfect your last moment interview look.
If your office is casual or business casual and you are planning on interviewing, start dressing up more now. Small subtle changes to your work wardrobe over a couple of weeks will be less obvious then walking in with a suit on the day of your big interview. Also, you don’t need to go with a traditional matching suit. Instead try a combo like shown below to make your look less interview obvious. It will play double duty by helping you look professional and more memorable since you’ll stand out from the crowd.

We started with a slate colored pant and added a light grey blazer to keep the styling professional. This blouse will make your look business casual without the jacket and add personality under the jacket during your interview. Keep accessories to a minimum since this outfit already has enough going on. Take off the jacket when you get to the office and leave it on your chair. If you drive to work, you can even leave it hanging in your car. This way you really avoid the office scrutiny. These pieces can be found at BananaRepublic.com , click on the images to learn more.
If your current job requires a uniform, our best advice is to bring a change of clothes. Don’t underestimate the first impression- dress to impress. If this is just not feasible, try these tricks. Many uniform pants are black, navy, or khaki. Trade in your standard casual style for a pair of trousers. Let a friend know what your up to so you can avoid any messy jobs for the day. Also wear a nicer pair of shoes. If you can prepare yourself this far you will only need to change tops and add a jacket before heading out the door. Depending on your uniform requirements you may even be able to use this trick for your blouse too. If anyone asks why you are so dressed up, shrug and say laundry day. Here are some of our easy care suggestions.

This cotton twill suit is easy to care for yet still professional. These styles were found at oldnavy.com , click on images for more info. Hopefully you can wear this white blouse during the day too. Then you just slip into your jacket and off to your interview in sophisticated style.
The job market is tough right now, don’t let your hectic schedule get in the way of your professional appearance. Follow our tricks to make sure you show up dressed to impress!

One of our readers asked a question that is often inevitable in the workplace. Can I purchase the same exact dress (or any other item) that my co-worker was wearing today and wear it to the office? Is there some unwritten office rule that I don’t know about?

Sometimes it can be just an office snafu- you and your co-worker accidentally wear the same blouse on the very same day. You both shop at the same store and couldn’t resist that $29.99 price tag. It’s funny and everyone gets a good laugh.
In fact who hasn’t innocently asked a co-worker where they got those cute flats or where did they find that fabulous dress? It’s curiosity on our end. Nothing is wrong with asking. It is up to the co-worker if they want to spill the beans on their find. However if you cannot live without purchasing that same exact item that your co-worker is wearing - you might want to strategize about where you wear it. Think about reserving the item for date night, dinner with friends, or wearing it on the weekend rather than the next day at the office.
It sounds so high school doesn’t it? But you have to remember that when you work with a bunch of women in an office each person has their own level of individual style. Some may or may not be offended you are “stealing” that style. For those that get a little miffed by the imitation, you will always run the risk as being labeled office style stalker or fashion copycat. For those that don’t mind, imitation will be the sincerest form of flattery!

It’s hot, your uncomfortable, and work still insists you dress business casual. What’s a chic mom-to-be to do? Don’t worry, we have you covered.

Summer Maternity Dress by Workchic featuring Miu Miu Shoes
Wear a bright summer dress that ties in the back to adjust for your growing belly and layer a tank underneath. This will make the look less revealing. You can accessorize with slingback flats, multi colored earrings and a woven handbag to complete the business casual look. Pair it with leggings when running around on the weekend. Dresses make getting ready in the morning easy, especially if you have another little one already running around.

Business Casual Maternity by Workchic featuring Old Navy Clothing
Our second business casual look starts with twill boot cut trousers. Secret fit belly should make sitting at your desk all day slightly more comfortable. Pair with a loose fitting summer print and wrap cardigan to fight off AC chill. We kept you in flats and matched them up to the cardigan. Accessorize with a brightly colored bracelet and finish with a warm grey bag.

Casual Maternity by Workchic featuring Old Navy Clothing
Lastly we have an outfit for more casual days in the office. This is very similar to the last outfit, but paired up with denim. The tops are also more fitted which will show off your belly a little more, so avoid if your office is more conservative. We still recommend a cardigan in case you catch a chill and this deep purple shade is seasonless. We paired with comfortable loafers and an oversized ring.
We hope these looks will help you stay comfortable and fashionable this summer in the office. Consider buying items a size up, especially earlier in your pregnancy so that they do not become to tight to quickly. You may also need to purchase shoes one size up. We recommend sticking to flats and play with color like we did to stylize your summer wardrobe. If you don’t like anything hovering around your neck accessorize with earrings, bracelets, and statement rings instead. Oversized tote bags will also be great before and after the little one arrives.

For more Workchic maternity pieces check out our selection of dresses and tops. We also have many ballet flats in a large variety of office appropriate styles. This is an exciting time and we want you to breeze through the summer with grace and style. Keep your look Workchic with our suggestions and congratulations!

I met the amazing Dani the other night who happens to own the jewelry line Agapantha. I immediately went to her website http://agapanthanyc.com and couldn’t decide what I loved more. I wanted everything! Plus all of the jewelry is made of 14K Gold fill and/or sterling silver chain, wire, or findings. Dani was also gracious enough to offer our Workchic readers 15% off everything on her site! All you have to do is enter the coupon code -WORKCHIC. Here is some information on Dani and her collection:
Designer Dani Linnetz founded Agapantha jewelry on a dusty road somewhere in the United States sometime in 2004. She wishes she could be more specific, but she was out touring the country with her guitar and she just can’t be sure. Back in Brooklyn, between tours she worked assembling jewelry for other designers until she decided she had to bring her own designs and ideas to life. And so it was born and an important artistic shift was made. No longer would she tour the world with her music, but instead, with trays filled with her hand-crafted semi-precious jewelry. Fast forward to the present…Agapantha is carried in dozens of boutiques nationwide and is growing by the minute. Oprah, Lucky, Daily Candy and many more have hopped on board. Agapantha has grown to include a line of one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and fine jewelry. All of the jewelry is still lovingly made by hand. Oh, and the name Agapantha you ask? It was the first flower Dani’s mom and grandma taught her how to say. She pays homage to them and all the important women in her life by naming each collection after someone special. All you have to do is put a piece on, and whether it’s named after you or not, you’ll feel special too!
Dani provided us with some her best sellers and workchic items from the site. You don’t want to miss out on these and the other goodies on her site!

Soft ruffles have been a strong trend for a few seasons now, and what’s not to love about floral prints. We are going to put together some business casual outfits that are feminine and still professional.
There is no denying the femininity of this blouse, and we are sure you know how to wear it with your denim on weekends. Follow these steps to make it work at the office too. Pair with khaki trousers and a belt. Finish the look with a collarless short sleeve jacket and peep toe pumps. They will add the professional look you want for work.

Joie Kayce Top, reg $198 sale $138
Women: Linen collarless jacket – Vintage navy, $130
Women: Martin weekend trouser – Active shore, $69
Patagonia O Web Belt – Natural, $27.95
Harri Pump – Blue, reg $104.99, sale $89.99

How about a floral skirt with soft pleats? It’s chic on the weekends with a simple t-shirt. Make it stylish and work appropriate with a belted cardigan vest and blouse. Finish with neutral accessories and chic pumps.

BB Dakota Walsh Skirt, $44
Splendid Sleeveless Wrap Cardigan, $63
Lace Ruffle Top, $18.99
Women: BR Monogram patent leather belt – Taupe, $75
Pompadour – Camel Leather, $124
Women: Confetti bangle – Pine, $39

The trick is layering the soft styles with stronger more structured pieces. Jackets do wonders along with tailored trousers and belts. Pick up these pieces and try experimenting with dresses too. We have a great selection for Spring and Summer. Have fun shopping and don’t be afraid incorporate soft and feminine styles into your professional wardrobe.

Well of course you can! We have been getting some reader questions on what is the best way to tie a scarf if you are plus size. The main concern from the letters is how to wear the scarf without drawing more attention to your bustline . Well if you you remember we posted a tutorial on how to tie a scarf back in February:
http://workchic.com/blog/2009/02/25/tie-on-a-scarf-for-spring/
However we wanted to circle back and focus more on this issue. We definitely feel that the best trick to wearing a scarf if you are plus size is to visually create a vertical line. You don’t want to wear the bulkier fabric scarves. Stick to something lightweight. We know the hottest way to tie a scarf right now is that of the bib look. You can see an example below This look may not be for everyone especially since the majority of the fabric lies right in the middle or right above the bustline. If you want to avoid that..then keep reading!

Here are our suggestions:

The first demonstration is tying the Black Painted Chiffon Scarf in a simple loose knot with the ends hanging loosely down. The longer the scarf the better. The second look is what we call the throw over your shoulder. Just wrap the ends evenly around your neck and throw one end over your shoulder. The one end hangs straight down. You can keep the scarf wrapped loose or have the scarf closer to your neck. We love how this Black and White Heart Print Fringed Scarf added some pop to a plain black tank but doesn’t overpower the neckline at the same time.
Ok the next look is one loop around. All you have to do is take a longer scarf like the Purple Crinkled Floral Patchwork Scarf shown in the picture and wrap once around your neck. The ends hang long and loose in front of you creating that vertical line. The next look using the Black and White Star Print Lurex Scarf is a bit more complicated but it is easy to do especially with a longer, lightweight scarf. It is called the fold, tie, and loop through. Fold the scarf in half lengthwise, wrap the scarf around your neck, and pull the ends through.
If all else fails and you want something just extremely simple- just wrap a beautiful scarf around your neck and let the ends hang loose.

No matter what you way you choose to tie your scarf it can instantly transform an ordinary outfit into instant workchic!

Our fellow friend Mallory is well past past the six month mark in her new job. Now she gets to experience the experience of dressing workchic for the warmer (and humid) NYC weather that is about to be bestowed upon us!
“I just read the post from Kimberly of Fab Finds Under $50 http://bit.ly/5bStA and she is so right on with wearing one dress for multiple occasions! Living in New York City especially in the summer, you always need to have a good dress handy. A dress will save you from the sweltering summer heat that lingers well into September. Good thing that everywhere I turn there are great dresses that are appropriate for work and for the weekend! My favorite thing about wearing these type of dresses are the bright prints and colors that they all come in. My philosophy is the brighter the better! Plus it’s so simple to wear the same dress during the week with a pair of cute heels or throw on a pair of flats with the same dress for the weekend. Doing this will save you from buying a ton of dresses with money that you might not necessarily have! The only drawback is that I have found that the dresses seem to be made for people with the exact opposite body type that I have! That would be tall and very lean. I am finding the more loose or flowy the dress is, the less flattering it might be on a person who is height challenged like myself. I found the best way to fix this challenging wardrobe issue is by wearing a scarf or belt at your waist. It will fix and change the whole look of the dress. I found a lot of great buys on workchic.com (the ones below are in my workchic faves account) and also found a lot of options that showed me how to wear certain types of dresses for my body type. Well what are you waiting for? Just go buy some dresses! The brighter the better right? You can’t have too many since summer is just about here!”

All of these dresses are from shopbop.com.
