After applying for dozens of jobs and going on several interviews, you’ve finally landed a great position at a company you love. You’re excited to be part of the team and, of course, bringing in a steady paycheck.
Looking around the office, however, you couldn’t help but notice that your co-workers’ desks are on the blah side, covered with office supplies and a random picture frame or two. And while you’re not required to wear a uniform, most of the team shows up to work in khakis and Polo shirts.
As someone who loves to decorate and wear stylish clothing, you really want to bring a sense of “fun” to your new job and desk. As for how to go about doing this, consider the following ideas:
First, Run it Past Your Supervisor
When it comes to dress codes at work, or a lack thereof, you never want to assume anything. Most likely, your new employer won’t necessarily make it a point to tell you what to wear to the office every day. Then again, make it a point to ask your supervisor if there is a formal dress code, as this will help you gauge what you can wear in terms of clothes and stylish accessories.
Express Your Style in Ways Others Can’t See
If you discover colleagues are wearing those khakis and Polos because it’s part of the dress code, no worries — you can still add a touch of style and your unique personality. For guys, wear comfortable boxers adorned with characters from your favorite TV show, like these Rick and Morty boxers from Hot Topic.
For women, donning garter lingerie under your outfit would be a fun way to embrace your sexy personal style, even when wearing a ho-hum outfit. Other examples of ways to add style to your work outfit is with holiday-themed socks, colorful earrings, scarves and a stylish watch.
Liven Up Your Desk
Again, with your supervisor’s permission, there are several ways to boost the stylish factor of your desk; depending on what you select, you may also find your workspace is more peaceful and conducive to better concentration. For instance, small low-maintenance plants like succulents are a simple way to brighten up your workspace.
If you have a whiteboard or corkboard, use washi tape to liven up the edges, and then use colorful magnets or push pins. And if you have files on your desk, keep them organized with clever bookends. Instead of classic metal bookends, opt for two geodes, two heavy coffee mugs that you can fill with colorful pens and/or hand-painted wooden blocks.
Add a Meaningful Mug and Some Photos
Speaking of mugs, if you like coffee or tea, bring in a mug from home. Maybe you have one or several that feature a photo of your dog, the logo of your favorite NFL or NBA team, or that has a motto you like. In lieu of bringing your dog to work, place a framed photo of your pooch in a stylish frame on your desk, along with other photos of your close family and friends.
Enjoy Your New Job!
It’s great you like your new job and are excited to be there. We bet you’ll be a great asset to the company’s team. Now, thanks to embracing your own sense of style wherever and however you’re able, along with some fun desk accessories, you will feel more productive, peaceful and ready to get to work every day.
