Dressed to Impress- Accessorize with Headbands!

      dsci0020_21.JPG

Our friend Mallory can now be officially classified as the working professional.  She has contributed her thoughts on how to dress for work on a major budget.  Here are some suggestions on how you can take what is in your closet and update it on the cheap:

I have definitely been one to talk up accessories, but I have to admit I should really use them more! Scarves were great additions to outfits for the winter, but I was trying to figure out what could replace them for the summer. The first thing I came up with were headbands.  I even found that some of my favorite celebrities were wearing their own interpretation of this trend.  Photos courtesy of Google Images.

Headbands come in different designs and fabrics and could add some much color to a basic outfit. Also, they are so affordable! Check out these fun headbands that I found right on workchic.com below!

The three headbands are from oldnavy.com and at $4.50 each you can afford all three!

I found the next set at shopbop.com for $35 each. They are great for those casual days at the office.

    Curvy and Workchic for Spring

Call it curvy, plus size, or well endowed just make sure your look is Workchic before you walk out the door to the office.  It’s Spring and this season we want to see you in hot new shades of yellow, blue, and coral; lots of fun prints; and utilizing your accessories.  Your work wardrobe should be kicked up and more vibrant this season.  Since you can read our other posts to find great accessories in this segment we are going to look exclusively at Plus Size Clothing for Spring.  Whether your office is casual, business casual, or business professional we have new Spring looks for you.

Dresses are a must have! If you office is on the conservative side wear a blazer or cardigan to stay covered up.  This is helpful for offices that can’t control the temps too.  We love these three styles from Lane Bryant.  They are all belted at the waist, accentuating your smallest part, then gently float out in a flattering A-line silhouette.  Pair these with black pumps or neutral sling-backs and stack on some bracelets to complete the look.

What better to go with a dress then a trench coat?  We love this coral shade from Old Navy, though it is also available in Black.  Either way they are under $50!  White and Navy plaid trench from CJ Banks is fun and sophisticated.  You can feel comfortable wearing this into most office environments.  Steel Blue microfiber trench is a true raincoat.  We found it at Lane Bryant Catalog for only $44.99, but please note all sales are final on this item.

Women's Plus: Women's Plus Belted Trench Coats - Happy Coral iconiconicon

Blouses are another simple way to update your work wardrobe for Spring.  You can work them in with your basics and existing pieces easily.  Take this printed blouse from Avenue with yellow accents.  Pair it with black or charcoal pants for a business casual office or wear with your dark wash denim for a more casual style.  For a truly casual office try this tie waist blouse.  Dress it up with a denim pencil skirt and sophisticated sandals.  The colors in this chiffon blouse from Dillards are easy to work back to black.  Pair with your basic trousers or layer under a suit jacket for a business look.

Old Navy’s Plus Size collection is only available on-line, but they do have a nice selection.  We found a few more Springy tops for you to check out for work.  We love the embroidered yoke details on this orange top.  No need for a necklace with this solid. I don’t think we need to tell you what makes this pink floral top one of our favorites.  It’s so sweet and feminine; plus it is another easy option to layer under a jacket especially in warmer months.  Our last option leans more toward Casual Friday but we just love the pin tucking details at the shoulder.

Dressed to Impress-Is it Spring yet?

Our favorite friend Mallory is know entering her fifth month into her new job.  She has the itch for Spring even though it may be 30 degrees out.  She’s over it!  Here is what she had to say:

” Well it’s that time a year again when I have the itch for Spring!   I can’t even bear to think of six more weeks of winter!  New York City indeed has had a strange winter this year.  One day it is freezing cold and then a blast of warm weather (40-50 degrees mind you) comes our way! I don’t know what to wear anymore.  The clothing selection in the stores right now are such a tease to us New Yorkers because of all the really cute dresses and open toe shoes that are everywhere!   There are some great buys out there right now though for the warmer weather that I can’t help but buy!  I feel like a lucky lady everytime I find a bargain!   I was searching dresses on workchic.com  and so many options came up.  I asked myself how much could I actually spend within my budget and I aimed for $50 and under, but allowed myself to look for dresses also around the $100 mark, just in case there was something really great I couldn’t pass up!   I found the brands BB Dakota, C & C California, Free People, and Old Navy had great dresses that were both affordable, chic, and work appropriate outfits.  Some of the dresses I found would need a cardigan or a little jacket to go over it, but mainly they were very suitable for spring/summer work attire.  I also found a real business casual look.  Not only is it very comfortable but the shirt dress can be found in almost any store and any brand you are looking for.Spring is around the corner- 25 days but who is counting?”Here are some of Mallory’s Spring bargains she found recently…

    sdc10813.JPGsdc10814.JPG

We like the business casual outfits Mallory found for Spring.  She could pair the outfits with a long cardigan and black opaque tights to get her through the colder temps until Spring rolls around.

Dressed to Impress- 3 month mark!

Our friend Mallory just achieved the 3 month mark in her new job.  Congrats Mallory!  During these past 12 weeks we have seen her transform from college student to hard working professional.  A little shy when it came to the shopping experience, Mallory has conquered her fears and can tell us all a thing or two about bargain shopping.  Here are her thoughts..

“Ever since the holidays, I’ve been a little nervous to go back to the stores because of the crazy crowds, but finally I returned to the idea of shopping this past weekend. All I can say is wow! There are tons of sales out there and even on the internet.  It is definitely the time to shop if you are in need of clothes. The only downfall I found was that they didn’t have my size in everything I needed, but if you search really hard, you are bound to find something that fits just right. I got this adorable jacket from Old Navy, which is for the spring time, but it only cost $8.47! You can’t beat that!  I just had to get it.  There were also great sales on sweaters.  All of the spring clothing is coming out now, but since it’s only January and living in NYC, sweaters are still very necessary!  There are sales ranging from $15-$20 and they were actually really well stocked with sizes, at least in the sweater dept. I found that going in and out of stores and searching the internet you just have to be a bit patient. Using workchic.com brought me to sales and offers that you can’t find in stores, which was great! There are new and exciting things that just came to stores for the spring time, but hey why not take advantage of the sales and stock up a bit for the winter time.  What you buy this year can prepare you for next year and at a cheaper price!”

Are you a Shlumpadinka? Part 2

There’s a chill in the air, the wind is whipping through your hair, and you just stepped in a giant puddle- all while wearing those new flats you bought over the weekend! All you want to do is crawl under the covers and hibernate. If that is not an option can you wear your sweats to work at least? We don’t suggest either so here are two options to braving the elements without looking like a shlumpadinka. Don’t remember what that phrase is exactly? The phrase was first created by Oprah. As she states on oprah.com: “I made this word up a long time ago. It represents, for me, a woman who dresses like she has completely given up…and it shows.”

    Dressed to Impress!

Can you remember the very first day of your job? The anticipation of the job yet alone what to wear to make that first impression is enough to keep you up at night. Our dear friend-Mallory- is starting a new job this week. She contributes her thoughts on choosing that first day outfit and how’ll she dress to impress. We would love to hear what you think of her first day outfit! Keep reading below…

“I have started about a million jobs over my college career (or what feels like anyway) and the night before you first day of your new job is always a little nerve wracking. Tomorrow, I am starting another new job and there’s a difference because this is the night before the first day of my first REAL job. Yes the real job that will pay the bills. This is the real deal. I have a million things going through my head, but one of the main thoughts running through my mind is WHAT DO I WEAR? How should I present myself on this day? Working in a medical office setting, it is all business casual. The way I chose my first day outfit was based off of what I observed in my new workplace, for example what the person wore who interviewed me or what the people wore that I will be working with. My idea of the perfect outfit for this day is to feel comfortable yet office appropriate. That outfit for me is a nice pair of maroon pants which were super afffordable from Old Navy, a black poplin shirt with collar that ties to the side (which gives the shirt a bit more style rather than just a typical plain black work shirt) from H & M, and black flats that have a little buckle at the toe. This completes my comfortable yet sophisticated look that I feel is appropriate for the day. To finish off the outfit, I will wear a simple silver necklace and of course my watch. I wouldn’t add too much else to this outfit. I think I would be overdoing it. If I chose a shirt that was a bit more simple, such as a plain button down, I would have tucked in the shirt and worn a black belt to complete the look. In this outfit, I feel that I will fit the dress policy my new company is looking for, yet still feel comfortable in my own clothes. I’ll update you in a week or so on my progress! ”

    Mallory

We wish you the best of luck on your first day Mallory! Remeber to keep shopping workchic.com for all of your work wardrobe needs!
