Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Thakoon Runway to Reality

Not only did Thakoon show a Fall collection with ensembles you could wear to the office, he also currently has a line available at Target.  Let’s take a look at what styles we can take from Runway to Reality.

His prints had a sophisticated edge we love for more conservative environments.  Shown in shades of blue and black they had a geometric quality without going tribal or ethnic as we have seen in many collections this fall.  We also prefer the black tights for work opposed to the overwhelming amount of leggings we have seen this season.

Soft neutrals were shown along side pops of color, like this stunning pleated Kelly green blouse.

Thakoon Grey Jacket and Ivory Short Thakoon Zebra Jacket

You know we love printed dresses, but we were also impressed with the luxurious and professional quality of his solid dresses.  The tan style is the perfect update to a shirt dress with simple details along the placket. While this black dress may not be the most fashion forward design, it’s the perfect look for any work wardrobe.  The LBD goes from office hours to dinner dates with ease.

Capture the style of his unique prints for Spring either in a full skirt or a blouse with pleated details along the neckline.  Either item is pure business casual style.  Add a cardigan in gray for chilly offices or until Spring temps finally emerge.

Pop your work wardrobe with a little color in this pleated short sleeve blouse.  The details are similar to the Kelly Green style shown on the runway.  You can score this style from Target for only $8.04 in Sunny Yellow or $11.49 in White!  Combine the shirt dress and LBD in this office ready style.  Accessorize with your favorite beaded necklace or printed scarf.

Special thanks to Style.com for their excellent runway coverage.  Extra special thanks to Thakoon Panichgul for collaborating with Target to create a line affordable for everyone.  No one should have a problem updating their work wardrobes for Spring with these pieces.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Derek Lam

There was no missing the fur trend for Fall ’09 in Derek Lam’s collection.  Whether you are for or against, fur will be seen walking off the runway this fall.  While these pieces were memorable, we’re going to discuss the styles we like for your office.  There were quite a few and we’re sorry we didn’t get to this collection earlier in the week.  The collection hit the runway in Bryant Park this past Tuesday in shades of desert sand and neutral bliss.  Jersey dresses clung to the models form without coming away to revealing.  Jackets we’re exquisite and skinny black pants were teamed with strappy woven sandals.

Steel these runway looks for the office with Derek Lam’s spring collection at Shopbop.com.  The cut-away leather jacket needs no explanation.  Take this metallic tweed peg skirt from business casual with a black sweater to business professional with an ivory blouse and one button jacket.  The pointed toe pumps are approved for either look.

If you have a more casual office try pairing an anorak with skinny jeans and spiked heeled oxfords.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Calvin Klein

The fall collection from Calvin Klein ranged in colors from Black to Silver with a couple of golden yellow pieces thrown in at the end.  This is one place we did not expect an explosion of colors or any theatrics.  Francisco Costa glorified the minimalist approach with texture.  Lots of bold texture.

The piecing on these dresses is exquisite.  Wool and Silk jacquards mingle with an effortless effect that we know was anything but during creation.  You can use this inspiration in your work wardrobe by mixing patterns and even textures.  Glen plaid or pin stripes can easily be mixed with bold florals or geometric patterns for an outfit that will inspire office creativity and broader thinking.

The first jacket shown mimics the handy work of the above dresses.  The second has a look all it’s own with an asymmetrical collar and closure, complete with pebbled textured fabric.

We’ll finish off our look at Calvin Klein’s Fall Runway with these to ultra chic suits.  From felted wool and a nipped in waist to over-sized collar and bracelet sleeves.  We love them both!

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Anna Sui

We we’re in print heaven with Anna Sui’s Fall Runway Collection.  While pretty frocks paraded down the runway, fashion splendor was achieved with exaggerated 1890′s inspired hats, a little wild west influence, and sheer fun.  As Anna Sui said, “If your going to have a show, have a show!”  While we have appreciated many of the paired down looks hitting the runway this year, a nod to work wardrobe style, it was nice to just have some fun.  She didn’t just show printed dresses, she emerged the outfits in varying patterns.  Tights mimicked the dresses and we even saw boots embroidered up in style.  This collection was serious eye candy.

We’re done with the details, see for yourself!

Score Anna Sui’s most work appropriate prints from her Spring collection.  The first one probably needs a jacket for the office though.  We even found a little of that wild west style in a fringed paisley scarf.  Runway opulence is also covered in this velvet jacket that can be dressed down with denim for a more casual office look.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Nanette Lepore

We reviewed Nanette Lepore’s collection for Spring, and we’re in love with the floral prints.  For fall she did not disappoint with more prints and even plaids walking down the runway.  She paired these with uneven hem lines, a bright palette, and leopard belts.  These looks should inspire your work wardrobe and your overall outlook.  Nanette Lepore shied away from the monochromatic looks we saw earlier in the week and jumped into color with both feet.

    Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Tibi

This Fall basics are not key for Tibi.  Instead we are seeing print, color, and more exploded print.  Bold and brightly colored prints catch women’s attention faster then any basic.  While you may love them or hate them these runway looks are sure to grab your attention and inspire outfits with personality in your work wardrobe.

Tibi’s collections was accessorized with fur muffs instead of handbags.  We also saw black legging and chic stilettos on every model.  These first two looks have similar lines but a very different effect.  One is bold and graphic the other is simple and textured.

Tibi Printed Runway Dress Tibi Gold Runway Dress

When not about print or texture Tibi designer Amy Smilovic embraced fall’s silhouette for impactful shoulders and tiny waists.  This petal skirt ads a little volume around the hips.  If structured is not your thing she still has you covered in this floaty, printed, chiffon dress.

Jackets are chic in white or printed.  Volume below the waist is still important along with shortened sleeves.

All over prints are chic, but so are styles with the print strategically placed.

The print on this dress is reminiscent of the fall jacket show above.  Plus we found some placed printed dresses too.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Jill Stuart

We love Jill Stuart’s feminine dresses and printed chiffon tops.  This season she added a rock star edge with a collection inspired by “iconic women of music”.  Leather, fringe, and ruffles supported both the edgy and her more traditional girly looks.  We slid more toward the latter for styles that could translate into the office.  Unless you’ll be going on tour this season, we recommend the following runway looks for your work wardrobe inspiration.

Shades of grey stripes are still strong and professional but come off more approachable then all black.  We love the shapes created here.  The bust-line on the dress gives an updated bow feeling without the extra flounce.  The second look’s ruffled party skirt is brought back into reality with a sophisticated striped jacket.  Paired with dress pants this jacket would be business casual any day of the week.  Though we don’t recommend shading your eyes with a hat in the office.

Jill Stuart Grey Striped Runway Dress Jill Stuart Grey Striped Runway Jacket and Skirt

Both of these looks have excellent inspiration too.  Chiffon blouses can look professional tucked into tailored trousers.  Puffed sleeves are still a big trend, and a nice way to add a little flair to an otherwise basic outfit.  While we wouldn’t wear this white dress to the office, the details can be dissected into workable looks.

Jill Stuart Runway Leather Pants Jill Stuart Bow Front Runway Dress

These two tops from Jill Stuart have the bow details at the waist and bloused sleeves as shown on the fall runway.  Shirts are selling quickly; the green is available in size 0 and 2, the grey in sizes 4 and 6.  We recommend wearing a cami underneath this top to avoid any unwanted skin views.  Black and grey stripes are runway inspired and worn with tailored high waisted pants, ready to strut through the hallway.

Jill Stuart Olivia Top Jill Stuart Olivia Top

This chiffon top pairs the gray stripes with the details of the chiffon top seen on the runway.  You’ll be looking Workchic and runway ready in this blouse.   This printed top would look perfect layered under a boyfriend style blazer; though since it’s on sale only a size 4 remains.  Suede lace up ankle boots will complete your Jill Stuart look.

    Fall 2009 Fashion Week: DKNY

We are very excited to share the Fall 2009 DKNY runway show with you!  This show was ready-to-wear ‘to work’ at it’s best.  We are talking walk off the runway into the office styles here.  Obviously some of the pieces and accessories are a little tricked up, but you are going to love this.  The color palette was sophisticated and truely fall in black, charcoal, red, and tan.  Houndstooth, plaid, stripes, and even some animal print patterns are complimented with envelope clutches and roomy totes. The look is perfect for any modern day business women.

Slimming pencil skirts fall below the knee and waists are neatly belted making the legs look long and lean.  Mixing patterns keeps these traditional styles young and fresh.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: BCBG Max Azria

The BCBG Max Azria show hit runways this past Friday.  Their geometric and uniquely tailored construction lend the collection toward work wardrobe styling.  Though we don’t recommend the metallic tights in the office.

Overall the collection had a very serious feel with minimal color and more monochromatic looks.  Softly draped necklines paired with a more fitted waist and soft skirts look feminine and fiercely chic all at once.  We love the way these first two jersey dresses conform to the models while the velvet and silk piecing adds an artistic line.

BCBG Maz Azaria Runway BCBG Max Azaria runway wrap dres

The striped dress is a bit more casual with a dropped waistband and over-sized bow at the collar.  Printing the stripes in grey and white has a tonal effect that keeps the look from being overwhelming.  This white suit can practically be worn off the runway into the office.  We are seeing a trend toward ready-to-wear collections walking down the runway instead of the more avant garde stylings.  Though there are still plenty of pieces you wouldn’t rock to the club let alone the office.  We’ll keep our posts to office friendly styles for you.

BCBG Max Azria Printed Runway Dress BCBG Max Azria White Dress

So how do you get the look now?  Here are our top picks in Spring colors from BCBG Max Azria.  The dresses sport geometric details and nipped in waists as shown on the Fall runway.  Add a blazer or cardigan until the weather warms up or to beat the chill in your office.

Since we don’t wear dresses everyday, trying pairing these tops with dress pants for a business casual office.  The bright rasberry style compliments the striped dress from the runways with it’s drop waist and collar details.  This color is much more appropriate for Spring and would look equally nice with charcoal slacks or dark wash denim.  Love the stripes?  Try these wide leg seersucker pants.  They are more casual and trendy so we do not recommend them for a conservative office.  Also you may want to size up.  Tight stripes are not flattering on any body type.  It’s better to buy them a little loose and have them tailored to your unique shape.  Top them off with this cap sleeved silk blouse comlete with draped ruffle details.

We love pouring over the runway looks every season but remember it’s Spring not Fall.  Embrace these details from BCBG Max Azria in Spring colors and fabrics.  Update your work wardrobe today.  To see more from NY fashion week, check Workchic’s blogs daily.
