Workchic is all about recognizing great talent and independent designers. According to Marsha Hallet, from Hallet Sweater Art, the silhouettes of a sweater can make you feel and look slimmer. Here is what she had to say below:
I started knitting as a young girl inspired by my grandmother who was an expert knitter and prolific producer of sweaters, dresses, scarves, and afghans for our entire family. From the very first pair of mittens she helped me make, I have been infatuated with this craft. My academic background includes a BA from Stanford and an MBA from the Anderson School of Business, UCLA. My career as a knitter began with my company Bo Peep. My partner and I sold children’s cardigans that looked like animals. With that limited experience, and a desire to visit Machu Picchu, I traveled to Peru in 1982 and established Hallet Handknits. The company made alpaca sweaters for men and women and was well known for patterns with intricate non-repeating textures and for intarsia knits with re-embroidery. Hallet Handknits were featured in prominent catalogs such as Talbot’s, Bullock & Jones and Paul Stuart and found in department stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. The sweaters were “seen on TV” on Angela Lansbury and Tim Allen. At Sweater Art, we want to “Dress You in Business Class” with luxury fibers, excellent quality, and exacting fit. Our customer is the executive woman 40 – 60 who wants to make a professional work attire statement and is looking for appropriate business casual clothing. We believe that both a successful track record and a powerful image are important in today’s competitive work environment. That is workchic. What makes our sweaters slimming? Our design philosophy is to use the optical illusion properties of color and line to flatter a woman’s body. “Seeing is believing” is a momentary deception, if we look long enough we can usually spot the trick. But, first impressions are lasting and our sweaters are slimming when it counts. We think that clothes that fit make you look slimmer. And, while nothing should be tight, it is best to stay away from bulky garments or long shapes that are disproportionate and add volume to your figure. Hallet Sweater Art’s fitted silhouettes and A-line shapes fitted at the bust make you appear slimmer. Several lengths are available so you can choose the proportion that is correct for your height and shape.Hallet Sweater Art correctly applies color and line theories to accentuate the positive about a women’s figure and make her look slimmer. Color blocking, particularly darker colors at the sides of the sweater, will make you look thinner. Styles with lighter bodies and darker sleeves use this same principle to narrow the torso. Sweaters with diagonal lines which angle towards the of the body and sweaters with vertical lines, use optical illusion to create a slimmer look.

At Hallet Sweater Art, we believe your clothes should express where you want to be on the career ladder. The days of demure are done. A powerful image is important to you. You can find more these of slimming cashmere sweaters on Workchic.com. Hallet sweater art will also be featured on Wednesday, Sept 2nd at 10AM on the slimming clothing segment on “Your Carolina show” that is shown daily on the CBS affiliate in North and South Carolina.

Our friend Mallory just achieved the 3 month mark in her new job. Congrats Mallory! During these past 12 weeks we have seen her transform from college student to hard working professional. A little shy when it came to the shopping experience, Mallory has conquered her fears and can tell us all a thing or two about bargain shopping. Here are her thoughts..
|
“Ever since the holidays, I’ve been a little nervous to go back to the stores because of the crazy crowds, but finally I returned to the idea of shopping this past weekend. All I can say is wow! There are tons of sales out there and even on the internet. It is definitely the time to shop if you are in need of clothes. The only downfall I found was that they didn’t have my size in everything I needed, but if you search really hard, you are bound to find something that fits just right. I got this adorable jacket from Old Navy, which is for the spring time, but it only cost $8.47! You can’t beat that! I just had to get it. There were also great sales on sweaters. All of the spring clothing is coming out now, but since it’s only January and living in NYC, sweaters are still very necessary! There are sales ranging from $15-$20 and they were actually really well stocked with sizes, at least in the sweater dept. I found that going in and out of stores and searching the internet you just have to be a bit patient. Using workchic.com brought me to sales and offers that you can’t find in stores, which was great! There are new and exciting things that just came to stores for the spring time, but hey why not take advantage of the sales and stock up a bit for the winter time. What you buy this year can prepare you for next year and at a cheaper price!”

It is now ten weeks on the job for our friend Mallory. She revealed all of her insecurities being at a new job from wardrobe issues to getting along with co-workers. This week she decided to turn her focus to her best friend, Andrea. Here is what she wrote below:
“Since all of my past blogs have been about me and my experience at my new job , I thought this week I should focus on how other people who are just starting out in the workplace are figuring out how to dress for their new jobs. This week, I want to focus on my best friend, Andrea. Andrea is a paralegal who works in downtown Manhattan at a large law firm. Her work attire is very different from mine because her office is all business attire, which consists of having a wardrobe of pantsuits and skirts. She had a good start to building her wardrobe by wearing her skirt and pantsuit and pairing them with different shirts and sweaters. It created new outfits for the week without spending alot of money. Now she has been at the job for a few months and is trying her best not to wear the same outfit constantly! Although I am learning and I am still not an expert in this department by any means.. I told her the first thing I could think of…go to workchic.com! She was really able to get many ideas because the website is specifically designed to make it easy to choose clothing for yourself and your work situation. It was great to help her as much as I could because she really appreciated new ideas and my input on how she could look and feel better at work.”

You’ve got it together, you always look chic and professional at the office. What about Mom? She started her career in a different era. Her hay-day included shoulder pads and matching crayola colored pumps. While she probably understands this is no longer appropriate, she might still be able to use a little Workchic style advice. Improve her work wardrobe this season with gifts from Workchic.com.
How about one luxurious Cashmere sweater for one sweater (insert your “favorite” here) in the trash. This boat neck style is from Banana Republic and is also available in Petite and Tall sizes. It may feel a little pricey at $160, but remember seeing that Christmas sweater in the garbage will be a gift to you too. Plus Banana Republic is offering free shipping today with code: JOY. At Lord & Taylor we found this elegant cardigan with a scarf neckline on sale now for $155.38 available in Plus Sizes. For Friends and Family extras use code: FRIENDS.

Teach Mom how to accessorize with costume jewelry. Once upon a time, this wasn’t accepted. Now we know it’s all about the look you create, not how much you spend. Necklaces from Kohl’s are chic and affordable, you can find the perfect style for your Mom’s wardrobe. This classically sophisticated look is on sale for $14; or go with something more contemporary in this Tortoiseshell and Leather option for only $18.20.

Since we did just look at handbags yesterday, we are going to give that a rest. Take a look at yesterday’s article, Workchic Gifts for your Favorite Boss, if they are on your Mom’s wish list. Otherwise we are going look at wallets. Sometimes we under estimate the importance of a nice wallet. When you are out to dinner with friends and co-workers, do they see your handbag under the table or the wallet you pull out? We found these at Endless, which happens to have free overnight shipping. Nine West wallet with snakeskin pattern for $39 also comes in a red or plum version. This vintage inspired Clutch, $28, looks like it might not keep you organizer, but there is a surprise. Flip it open to reveal credit card slots, ID window, and more.

Gifts like these will show Mom how much you care; plus help her improve her work wardrobe. Shop today before discounts end. Use coupon code JOY at Banana Republic and FRIENDS at Lord & Taylor. Overnight shipping is always free at Endless.com. Happy Shopping!
